Workshop: Presentation Skills

9-10 July 2024, On-Site (Room TBA)

Presenting research to different audiences is a crucial skill that every scientist has to master. Most of the time, research presentations occur in a time-constrained environment (i.e. when presenting a poster). For this reason, it is particularly important to learn how to convincingly present one's own research in challenging circumstances.

To train doctoral researchers' presentation skills, researchers at Convide have access to a two-day, on-site workshop. Attendees acquire crucial rhetorical skills, learn to adjust their communication to the needs of their audiences, and improve their appearance through facial expressions, gestures, and body language. Most importantly, they learn how to prepare and give a powerful talk in a number of different practical exercises. To meet the needs of researchers in the engineering disciplines, the workshop will focus primarily on poster presentations.

Key Topics:

  • The Core Message
  • Addressing Your Audience
  • Increase Attention
  • One Minute Madness: Practical Excercises with Visualization
  • Story-Telling
  • Convincing, not Coaxing
  • Performance, Expressions, and Gestures

Trainer: Dr. Ulrike Brandt-Bohne holds a PhD in Biology and has been working as a science journalist and workshop trainer for the renowned National Institute for Science Communication for many years.
